The Milwaukee Update Column reports on apparatus and equipment of both the City of Milwaukee Fire Department, and the surroundings suburbs, primarily in the counties of Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, and Kenosha. The City of Milwaukee operates a fleet of approximately one hundred vehicles. There are thirty-seven engine companies, sixteen ladder companies, eight paramedic units, four BLS ambulances, six battalion chiefs, a deputy chief, and several special units including the haz-mat, heavy urban rescue team, dive rescue, a compressed air unit, a command van, a high volume unit carrying LDH, and a fireboat. There are on-going changes as new rigs arrive, older apparatus are reassigned or placed into reserve status, and apparatus are sent for refurbishing. The focus of the Milwaukee Update Column is to keep the reader informed on the apparatus of the Milwaukee Fire Department from specification writing to the contract award to the delivery of new rigs, and the reassignment of older rigs.
